An original recipe from the D'Ouwe Werf in Stellenbosch, and a national favorite in South Africa. Cook stewed fruit with some water, red wine, and sugar.

  1. Fry 2 chopped Onions in oil till limp.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon Curry Powder, 2 tablespoons Sugar and 1 teaspoon Turmeric.
  3. Soak 1 slice of Bread (3cm) in 1 cup milk. Squeeze all the milk from bread and set aside.
  4. Fry meat- 1 kg minced Beef - with curry mixture till nice and brown.
  5. Beat 2 eggs with the milk from the bread - should be 1 cup - add to the mixture.
  6. Add to meat mixture together with: ± 1 teaspoon Salt, 1 tablespoon Raisins, 10 quartered Almonds, rind of 1 grated Lemon, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, 100ml Vinegar.
  7. Mix well together.
  8. Put in a greased casserole dish - stick lemon or bay leaves in and pour over 1/2 cup milk, 1 egg, salt and pepper.
  9. Bake ± 1/2 hour till set at 180°C.
